I was a visitor to a top private school last year. One of the deputy heads there found me in the dining room without my visitor. My 'visitors lanyard' was hidden under my jacket, so this is a very real safeguarding issue. The deputy head treated me as if I was muck under the bottom of his shoe. And would you guess, he was wearing not one, but two lanyards. Isn't one enough, surely?

The irony is, he is put on gardening leave a year later because he had a child with a school child who was visiting his wife for a tutoring lesson. And these types of schools don't want any 'ghosts in the closet' when an inspection is due. And yet these are our moral betters.

I wish The Times would publish this excellent piece. It goes to the heart of the problems we are facing with a surgical precision.
